Why Must We Die
2024

I wish I could just hear you whisper,
Or hear you moving something in the other room
If the floor would just creek one more time
Or we smiled at each other
As you walked from one room to the next

I am a dead man walking
Dead as in, they took my life
By taking you

A soundless aperture
wakeless souls walking mortal
Dead and breathing
Baring earth until they take me too

I am waiting, as if
The bullet has already been fired
It’s just not yet reached my chest
Yet I am walking,
Talking
Screaming mostly

I am out of screams as we’re screaming
Imagine shouting at the top of your lungs
but inside, silence
The bodies, the smell, the stains on my hands
It used to be loud,
Now it is a thick quiet, and as sick as it is
I wish I could hear it all,
But this sickly silence,
You’d think somewhere there would be
seeking forgiveness
But it is just seeking more blood
More blood, until it scrapes away

How many more must they take
Before eventually they take me too

What torture is it
That I must mourn love
Just to wait until hatred kills me

What torture is it
That I must mourn for my people
Before we are all dead
And this land has forgotten our names

‘Why’ hasn’t been asked enough
Yet it is quickly answered
As if we are not dead, dying
Dead, dying,
dying, dead

What torture is it
That I must mourn love
Just to wait until hatred kills me

Why, hasn’t been asked enough.

Why must we die.
